Carlo Ratti says iPhones, social networking make cities smarter


Carlo Ratti, director of the City Lab, believes that the newest technologies like social networking, wireless communication and iPhones can make cities smarter.

Ratti said that the only way to really answer some of the big problems such as climate change is to actually act together and coordinate with each other. He also added that for the first time, the power of networks and the Internet can bring people altogether.

In addition, one product was the Copenhagen Wheel, a gadget that is attach to a bicycle and offers details on how much people are riding. The lab also creates interactive screens for bus stops that can communicate well with an iPhone, trading advertisements to travelers or to serve a big screen for hand-held activities.

Furthermore, because of the new innovations in technology, they created a project of Trash Track to study where recyclables go. According to Dietmar Offenhuber, a student doctor in the City Lab, there is a bounty of study on how things are created; however, there is also a little known about how they demote and finally gone.
