Elena Kagan is confirmed by the Senate as the 112th justice of the Supreme Court and the fourth woman in its history.

Based on the reports, the vote was 63-37 for the nominee of President Barack Obama to replace the retired Justice John Paul Stevens. In an uncommon practiced ritual reserved for the most historic votes, the senators sat at their desks and stood as they say “ayes” and “nays”. Kagan will have her oath taking at the court by Chief Justice John Roberts in Saturday afternoon.

According to President Obama, who is traveling in Chicago, Kagan will be a very outstanding Justice who deeply understands that her rulings will greatly affect the people of the United States and he also said that the addition of another woman to the Supreme Court is a sign that the country is continuously progressing. The President invited the newly elected Justice of the Supreme Court in the White House on Friday for a ceremony marking.

According to president Obama, the vote is a confirmation of her character, temperament, evenhandedness, open-mindedness, and determination to hear all the different kinds of stories and the knowledge to consider all the arguments.

Republicans and Democrats clashed over the nomination of Kagan. According to the Republicans, Kagan is a politically aggravated activist that will not dismiss her rule and opinions impartially. The Democrats defended Kagan and they said that she is highly qualified for the position and they believe that Kagan will make a difference and bring a note of moderation.

Kagan is considered as the first Supreme Court nominee for over 40 years without any experience as a judge and the oath taking will leave a mark in history where three women will be seated on the nine-member court together.
