Scientist had captured the rarest otter animal in the world in Sabah, Borneo, which they first believed was already extinct.
The animal was a hairy-nosed otter and been discover through a photo being captured in a forestry reservation in Deramakot in Sabah.
The species was captured by an automated camera, amongst to several cameras been arranged and set up to the around the forest reserves in Deramakot two years ago. It was a part of a project initialized by the Leibriz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife research (IZW), the Conservations of Carnivores in Sabah project or ConCaSa, together with the Sabah Forestry Department and Sabah Wildlife Department.
According to the experts, the occurrence of this rare creature happened over a century ago in Sabah, the hairy-nosed otter disappeared for a long time in Borneo, until an accident happened, and a car killed one of these creatures accidentally in 1997.After the accident it was then unknown to the experts if the species are still existing on Borneo.
The Otter creatures occurs in few land limited locations and areas outside of Borneo.Experts only found out their rediscovery of the hairy-nosed otter Lutra Sumatra after they have examined and scrutinized the pictures of three various species of otter family.
One of the species been captured by their camera was known as Lutrogale perspicillataor the so-called smooth-coated otter, and the other one was the small-clawed otter of Asia or the Aonyx cinereus.
The experts take a closer looked and examined the captured photograph of the otter. On their record it revealed that the otter species they have captured was characterized by hairy-nosed otter, which it have longer and flatter head, while its throat was coated of white fur and its body had darker color of fur than its two other otter species.
