Argentina was triumphant once again, as they defeat rival Brazil with a 93-89 victory, in the ongoing FIBA World Championships in Turkey.
Luis Scola, the six-foot-nine power forward Argentine scored 37 points and was the go-to player of his team in the last few minutes of the game held at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul. The win gives them a quarterfinals berth and will give them the opportunity to face Lithuania on Thursday.
Scola scored 10 points in four-of-four shooting in the final three minutes of the match, which kept Brazil at bay. According to a post-game interview with Scola, he said that he was fortunate that he made all of the field goals that he attempted. He also said that sometimes his shots go in, while some do not, and that is the nature of the game. He now averages 30.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in every game that he has played in the tournament.
Fabricio Oberto, who plays center for Argentina, said that Scola has a lot of energy and that the Houston Rockets’ power forward is eager to play basketball. Oberto also added that Scola makes playing basketball look so effortless.
Scola was a part of the 2004 Argentine Olympic team that won the gold medal, along with National Basketball Association (NBA) star player Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs. He was drafted 55th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2002 NBA Draft, but was not allowed to play because of the restrictions of NBA rules, which limits teams of paying no more than $500,000 of a player’s buyout. He was also a former Euroleague superstar, playing for Saski Baskonia of Liga Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto or Liga ABC.
Scola re-signed with the Rockets earlier this summer for $47 million over five years. However, with the way he is playing in the FIBA World Championships, it seems like the Rockets acquired a promising player with less the price.
